(6) Objectives of the competition
Contestants can choose one of the eight application scenarios listed above to design customized and personalized urban furniture. They need to adopt additive manufacturing concepts through three-dimensional digital design, topology optimization design, as well as choosing 3D printing materials and technologies.(3D design and manufacturing for one specific application scenario)
They can also choose a motif and design a series of urban furniture themed on the motif (these pieces of urban furniture can be extended or combined together). This series of urban furniture can be applied in several of the above-mentioned scenarios. (3D design and manufacturing of a series of urban furniture for multiple application scenarios)
We hope the contestants could meet the following objectives no matter what application scenarios they choose:
Ensure the entries have shapes and structures that cannot be made using traditional processing techniques (needs to be made by 3D printing);
Ensure that modular structures are used whilst supporting a variety of combinations;
Ensure an artistic appearance and social interaction needs are being met.
Ensure the strength is sufficient in order to meet the demands of safety, weatherability and durability;
Ensure the timing of manufacturing is relatively short;
Ensure the manufacturing costs are relatively low (contestants need to estimate their own manufacturing costs)
Ensure customized production is feasible in small quantities
We encourage the contestants to improve their solutions and increase added value based on the following aspects:
Based on the features of the venue, contestants could draft the solution according to the characteristics of the users and consider their needs for usages of urban furniture;
Demonstrate innovation while choosing materials, such as using recyclable materials to highlight environment protection;
Have distinctive shapes which may be used for applying for intellectual property rights;
Contestants may make the 3D printed urban furniture more intelligent by integrating more technological factors like artificial intelligence and big data.
